If you want the latest software, go with Manjaro XFCE. On an eight-year-old laptop, I would personally go with Xubuntu (actually, I would go with Linux Mint XFCE), as you don't need the latest kernal to take

I preferred using this plugin when I was unable to customize the default battery indicator to show battery percentage on the panel.
