It was originally based on Tomato, and got extensively modified by Asus over the years as they added their own features to it. Asuswrt-Merlin is an alternative, customized version of that firmware. Developed by Eric Sauvageau, its primary goals are to Asus acknowledged via email that the RT-AC56U had had a 2.4 GHz problem but said that a firmware update last year fixed it. However, we encountered the same 2.4 GHz issues with our RT-AC56U, which Asuswrt-Merlin ===== This is an enhanced version of Asuswrt - the firmware used by all recent Asus routers. The goal of this project is to fix issues and bring some minor functionality adjustments to the original Asus firmware. While some features do get added, this is not the main focus of this project. All of this was before I bought the Asus RT-AC56U router. The AsusWRT firmware supports something called “Dual WAN” - an option to have two Internet channels connected. Apart from the dedicated Ethernet WAN port, you can either plug in a 3G USB modem, or use one of the 4 LAN ports for a second WAN. In my case, I connected the ADSL modem to LAN. Asus RT-AC56U is the successor of the widely popular Asus RT-N56U. Many people who have used the Asus RT-N56U and have been impressed by its performance would quite naturally want to know if the new router is a worthy replacement for its older brother.
